DIARY
- Tuesday 1st January
2008
There must be something
wrong somewhere - because
it took 7 hours to go
from Barnsley to London,
but only 11 hours to go
from Heathrow to Hong
Kong!
It was a great flight,
the highlight had to be
looking out of the window
flying over Novosibirsk,
Barnaul and the north
west region of Mongolia.
The Altai Mts were
spectacular from
37,000ft. A snow covered
landscape all the more
special because I had
ridden my bike over them
in 2005. The outside temp
was a cool minus 50
Celsius so the
information read.
Saigon was a beautiful 20
degrees, stepping into a
warm bath, it was heaven.
The traffic was something
different. Arriving just
as it dropped dark to
millions of motorcycles,
five on one bike being
the most I counted.
Organised chaos, a
massive swarm of fish
swimming up and down the
choked roads.
"Saigon
shuffle" is the way
to cross the road. Walk
slowly and the bikes miss
you, nerve wracking at
first but it really does
work - one cyclo rider
told me he had been
working/riding for 22
years and never hit
anybody (he didn't say
how many times HE had
been hit though!
Happy New Year to all, it
was a fantastic new years
eve, different in the
extreme!
